ComSoc Bursaries and Subsidies

The ComSoc Bursary Program provides support to Commerce students to allow them to get involved in conferences and pursue their passions. ComSoc offers an internal bursary, which is reserved for partially reimbursing students for ComSoc-based conferences. An external subsidy assists students in covering the costs of attending a non-ComSoc conference.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the VP of Operations, René Puerta (vpops@comsoc.queensu.ca).

External Subsidies

What does an Internal Bursary cover?

All ComSoc-based conferences and competitions, regardless of where they take place, qualify for an Internal Bursary. Please see the complete list of all conferences under the Commerce Society which can be found on the site under the Student Involvement tab. An internal bursary covers up to 50% of delegates total conference fee. For example, if the delegate fee to attend is $300, and you are awarded a bursary, you can be reimbursed up to $150 upon returning from the conference. This bursary does not cover additional costs outside of the delegate fee.

What does an External Subsidy cover?

For all qualifying, non-ComSoc business related conferences, the External Subsidy is composed of two components: merit-based and financial need-need based. The merit component reimburses you for up to 30% of the total fee to attend, up to a maximum of $300. The financial component may reimburse you for up to 45% of the total fee to a maximum of $450.

 Frequently Asked Questions

If I apply for either the Internal Bursary or External Subsidy is it guaranteed that I will receive it?

We encourage all students to apply for either the Internal Bursary or the External Subsidy, however under no circumstances is any applicant guaranteed to receive any money at all.

What is important to specify in your application?

BARC understands that Commerce Students are from all over Canada, and the world. It is still important that if you receive any type of financial aid, that you please be extremely clear as to what the aid is. For example, if you are from outside of Ontario, and receive aid from a provincial system such as OSAP, please provide the name and government source to provide better context. This will provide a fuller picture to BARC to better allow them to judge the demonstrated financial need.
